A Short Feature Film
(A story of a
sheep who gets a human life)
▲ Making of
“My Karma”
Kolkata (Calcutta) for me is the most special place on
earth in terms of the 'life in totality’ and
Kalighat is its epicenter. All the feelings I went
through all these years in and around Kalighat
obviously make my first film through this place. I
didn’t want to glamorize the poor or to snare at the
rich. I dream a lot and believe that when I dream, I
must dream the best. And till now, I can say with
all my humility, truth and FAITH that all what I have
dreamt, I have got much more than what I had
dreamt of. So even if this was my first film, I
expected and I got the best people who would help me
in realizing my vision. I wanted to produce
this film because I wanted all the money, which
comes from this film to go fully towards its
goal, that is, to the poor-people in need. I wanted to pay everybody
their due remunerations too.
My first big obstacle was to get money. My budget was
small but I had no resource to fund it. It is
then my friends across the world came out to help!
Within a week I got in the form of various loans,
all the money I needed - a miracle!!!!! What moved me
was the feeling with which the help came!
'Korak, I earn a lot but I can’t change
that money into love, so I give it to you because you can'.
Someone wanted to buy a second hand car
but thought that it could wait.
Someone inherited a little money, he
loaned a part with me.
Someone got a grant for higher education,
but thought he could live with a hardship.
Someone with a meager income spared a
small amount because he felt that he must share.
All this at the call of my soul for help to make this
miracle, this film happen!! Help also came in the
form of getting the best people for making of the film.
Be it the Cinematographer, the Soundman, the
Art director, the artists who came with their best
intentions and gave their best! I shot in 2 days of 4
days of shooting time and could complete the film way
ahead of the schedule. But for their unstinted
co-operation it would have been impossible. That's why I
prefer to say “My Karma” is a film Produced
and Directed "through" (not by) Korak Day.
The character ‘Soul’ or the ‘inner-conscious’ of the
main character, I wanted someone with the most special voice and this voice
was of a top star of Kolkata. When I approached Sabyasachi Chakraborty he
readily accepted the part even though it was such a little portion. He
could see the depth of the
role. Each person even though they are all top film
people from the industry here contributed in this “love affair” called ‘My
Karma’ as if it is their own film.
The main cast of this film has Arjun Chakroborty and
MoonMoon Sen. I have also done a small part
of a dying destitute for which I nearly fasted for more
than 6 months to get the look and feel of the character, which
was closest to my heart.
