“When we realize our  ‘Self’ then we realize that there is

only one Soul and not many souls. This Soul of all beings

is one with the Soul of the Eternal, the ultimate feeling."

A Brief History of Aamar Nijer My Own Training School

The work of Aamar Nijer unofficially began on July 1 2002. Korak Day wanted to work in the area of Calcutta that had the greatest need and was the most      difficult area to work in. Through the assistance of a friend, Korak came to know about the daily life of young children and women in the Narkeldanga area of Calcutta, which is particularly depressed economically and socially. Though Korak was considered an outsider for this community, his persistence and dedication eventually won the hearts of many of the parents and kids in the area. Together, it was decided that a strong education was the most important need as many of the students could not go to school for lack of money, where they had started to work at an early age and education was not a high priority. For the kids who did go to the public schools, the schools were an education only in name, as the kids who went to these schools could not pass the exams to enter secondary school. Korak started with a one room setup with twenty young teenagers to whom he was teaching the English language, hindi (a national language of India) , public speaking and personal development. As the work become more known, more students and parents wanted to join. After three years, there are about 350 children who are a part of the Aamar Nijer - My Own's formal education system, with grades ranging from preschool to 6th grade.

The course work has expanded to include subjects such as English, Hindi, and Bengali language coursework, mathematics, science social studies. There is an extensive humanities cirriculum that seeks to develop morally and spiritually strong students who also excel academically and have a sound understanding and practice of personal and community responsibility. Such goals are demonstrated and reached through quarterly performances of dramas, song and dance, plays, community development activities along with field trips to various museums, parks and other places of significance. The quarterly shows take place in a large auditorium where the parents and members of the community are invited. During these large gatherings, the parents get to see and experience the essence of Aamar Nijer-My Own. Physical and mental fitness development play an equally important part of the education, and along with the moral, spiritual and academic growth, make for the most well rounded individual and hence lead to the development of a flourishing society.

There are an additional fifty students who are older but for whom we do not have a formal curriculum. These students receive individualized small group instructions as taught by Korak, as preparation for these students secondary school or college entrance exams.

Korak himself cannot teach all 350 fifty students and so he has recruited and trained about 15 of the more talented older adolescents and young adults to teach the kids from the younger classes within the framework of the curriculum, and to learn the administrative aspects of the school. In addition, there are 25 older teenagers who do not participate in the academics of the school but are a part of the vocational training program, where the students with some talents for handicrafts are trained to create various handicrafts like hand made greeting cards (enclosed), flower baskets, candles, clothes embroidery, painting. We have recruited some talented people to help with this training. Some of these undertakings have transformed into a polished product (for example, the greeting cards) which have been well received by several people from around the world. These students of handicrafts are called artist and are paid to create the handicraft works. Currently, these handicrafts products are used as a fundraising tool for us where contributions for the work are exchanged for various products.

These activities are done in two small buildings which we rent. The space is limited. But we manage in the best way we can without compromising our principles and goals. Soon, we hope to purchase land within walking distance of this community and construct a school building of our own that has all the necessities and structural support of a 'normal' school. Some of the older students have been taught how to make the commonly eaten foods in a healthy and energizing way, which has progressed into a small cafeteria for the school.

There is an Action Club for the older teenagers where the kids learn about problem solving, conflict resolution and personal responsibility. The older teenagers are taught the importance of being a good role model for the younger students, assist with tutoring when necessary, and taking action for the betterment of their own life, family life and community greater good. Community clean ups, social support and counseling are a regular part of the activities. All the activities of the school requires about 12 hours per day. The school is open from 9am to 8pm. Because of the limited space, students are divided into morning and afternoon sessions.

The 35 year old Korak Day is the person with the vision and energy for the work. Prior to moving to Calcutta, Korak Day had earned Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry and Physicas and a Master's degree in Mathematics. After completing his education, Korak, worked as a Naval officer in the Indian Navy, which at the time was one the most prestigious and high paying jobs in India. After working at this job for four years, Korak decided to leave his job with hopes of doing something more with his life. He moved to Calcutta from New Dehli and earned a full scholarship to one of the top film school's in India with no prior film experience. In addition, he was volunteering full time with various charity organizations. After six years of this full time volunteer work and full time film studies, Korak left his volunteer work and started the work of Aamar Nijer - My Own. Since the completion of his film studies, Korak has created a 30 minute film which has won several awards at various film festivals in the United States, Europe and Asia. In addition, he has produced two music albums and two books of poetry and inspiration. All the creative works aim to give good feelings and inspiration for the people who struggle for joy and peace. The money earned from the film, music and books goes completely for the work of Aamar Nijer - My Own.

Dipak met Korak Day in Sept 2000 when Dipak when to Calcutta for a three month trip. After his trip, Dipak joined Korak in the efforts to start the work of Aamar Nijer - My Own. Together, they decided upon the necessary course of action and direction of the work. Neither Korak nor Dipak take any monetary compensation for the work. Dipak is a full time medical student and will be starting his medical residency in June 2006.

The main priority right now is to construct a large facility as the main school building. We currently rent a small apartment that is the main office for the work in Calcutta.
